Truth that Brings Freedom

Truth that Brings Freedom

Monday, September 3                                                             John 14:1-7
If you had to guess, what would you say the disciples are struggling with in these passages that prompts Jesus to comfort them? How does He comfort them? What are the reassurances that He offers? In verse 5, Thomas is looking for direction-something to help guide his life. What is Jesus' response? How is this an answer to you when you're looking for guidance?

Re-state v. 6 in your own words. How do you respond when faced with the statement that there are many ways to God?

Tuesday, September 4                                                    John 8:31-36
What is the point Jesus is trying to emphasize here? What, in your own words, is freedom? What is truth? How does the truth of Jesus bring the freedom we need? How do you think our world defines freedom? How is it different from the kind that Jesus is talking about here?

How have you seen sin enslave people? Is this an overstatement on Jesus' part? Why or why not? In your own life, how are you doing in your struggle against sin?

Wednesday, September 5                                                 Jeremiah 7:21-28
These words from the Old Testament are a warning to cultures and people who abandon God and His ways. How does this ring true in our world? What more convenient "truths" do you see people embracing? What about in your own life?

Read v. 22-24. What is the tone of this verse? What is it an invitation to? What does that say about the heart of God toward us? What is the "correction" you need to hear from this passage?

Thursday, September 6                                                         James 1:21-25
What is the "word" referenced here? What are the warnings of not letting the word have an impact on your life? How has the word changed you? Is that change recent, or has it been a while since the truth has made an impact in your life in a substantial way?

What does it mean that there is a "perfect law that gives freedom?" What is the promise for those who let that law have its impact? How have you experienced the freedom that comes with following the truth?

Friday, September 7                                                                 Psalm 119:57-60, 89-91
Read vs. 57-60 aloud. How do these words resonate with your soul? Can you say them honestly? If not, what is keeping you from doing so? If yes, what are the specific commands (v. 60) that God has called you to obey?

Read vs. 89-91. What are the promises/affirmations/truths in these verses? Take some time today to pray these passages back to God from your heart.
