Finishing Well

Tuesday. August 19 2 Corinthians 3:16-18
What is the point of this passage? How are we to grow and change during our lives here on earth? What does it look like to "reflect the Lord's glory?"
In your own life, how is Jesus changing and causing you to grow? Is the glory "ever-increasing," or are you stagnant? Why? Spend some time today reflecting on how God is changing and molding you to be like Jesus, and give thanks. If your life has become stagnant, spend some time asking the Lord how He wants to help you grow and what areas of your life need changing. Remember: there is no condemnation is Christ-but God loves us enough to never leave us alone!
Wednesday, August 20 1 Chronicles 29:21-28
Compare and contrast David's death with that of Saul. What was going on around David at his death? What did he leave behind? What does that have to say about the kind of man David was?
When you think about your legacy, what do you want to leave behind? What do you want your kids to know and understand? What do you want people to remember you for? How can you live more fully into that legacy today?

Taking the High Road
Monday, August 11 1 Samuel 24:1-12

What does it say about David that he was conscience-stricken for something so seemingly innocuous? Why do you think he reacted this way? Was it an overreaction? In your life, how do you discern when something is right or wrong? How are you doing at really following your discernment in those moments?
Tuesday. August 12 1 Samuel 26:5-11, 22-25
According to the customs of the world around him (though not by Israelite law), David would have been justified in taking the throne by force. How tempted would you be, given a second opportunity, to go ahead and take the throne? Why does David resist? How do you think David discerned this?
What principles guide your life and decisions? How do circumstances play into those decision-especially on stuff that is "gray" morally or spiritually? What examples can you think of that are "right" according to our world, but are challenged by following Jesus? How do these tempt you? How do you resist?
Wednesday, August 13 1 Corinthians 10:23-33
Is everything permissible for those of us who follow Christ? Why or why not? Why is it so easy for us to justify doing things that we know are not honoring to God? What does this passage have to say about those things?
Given that there is no condemnation for those who trust Jesus, what is the motivation to live a godly life? What guidelines does Paul give here for us to use as we navigate decisions and actions? How are you doing at living into those?

Tuesday. August 5 1 Samuel 20:1-4
Jonathan and David have some difficult things to discuss here. What do you learn about friendship from their interaction? What hard truth is David able to say to his friend? Why do you think we shy away from this sort of communication in our friendships?

Wednesday, August 6 1 Corinthians 15:33-34
If its true that you can measure a person by the company they keep, how would you stand up? Do your friends share values like integrity, honestly, love for God, and holiness? How does bad company corrupt our character?
Its clear that David and Jonathan are both good men. How do these mutual values (ie r/ship with God, integrity, mutual affection) reinforce their friendship? Do you have as many, more, or less friends that share these values?
Thursday, August 7 1 Samuel 20:41-42
The level of trust that David and Jonathan share is one of the great aspects of their friendship. How is that communicated in these passages?
Do you have friends that you would literally trust with your whole family? Spend some time praying for those friends. Thank God for them, and ask how you can continue to build into those friendships in a godly way.
Friday, August 8 John 13:34-35
What does Jesus establish here as the NORM for Christian relationships? How would you define what love should look like between friends? How is that a precious commodity in our world today?
When we live in isolation or without deep, satisfying friendships, we are really violating this command from the Lord. What can you do to be a resource to the people around you, fulfilling Jesus' command?

What does Saul concern himself with that takes the place of simple obedience? Why is that so tempting for us? How have you experienced that temptation?
Friday, July 11 1 Samuel 15:30-35
What is the true reason Saul wants Samuel with him? What is he still concerned with more than his sin? How does that justify God's act in removing him from power? Scripture says that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning on wisdom." What does that mean?
In your own life, God has likely given you roles of authority or influence. Have you ever been concerned that he might remove you from those? Sometimes we must walk away from situations that are bad no matter how sad it makes us. Are there any situations or habits you should leave and start following God?
